The Heavens Are Empty: Discovering the Lost Town of Trochenbrod by Avrom Bendavid-Val

In the 19th century, nearly five million Jews lived in the Pale of Settlement. Most lived in shtetls—Jewish communities connected to larger towns—images of which are ingrained in popular imagination as the shtetl Anatevka from Fiddler on the Roof. Brimming with life and tradition, family and faith, these shtetls existed in the shadow of their town’s oppressive anti-Jewish laws. Not Trochenbrod.

Trochenbrod was the only freestanding, fully realized Jewish town in history. It began with a few Jewish settlers searching for freedom from the Russian Czars' oppressive policies, which included the forced conscriptions of one son from each Jewish family household throughout Russia. At first, Trochenbrod was just a tiny row of houses built on empty marshland in the middle of the Radziwill Forest, yet for the next 130 years it thrived, becoming a bustling marketplace where people from all over the Ukraine and Poland came to do business. But this scene of ethnic harmony was soon shattered, as Trochenbrod vanished in 1941—her residents slaughtered, her homes, buildings, and factories razed to the ground. Yet even the Nazis could not destroy the spirit of Trochenbrod, which has lived on in stories and legends about a little piece of heaven, hidden deep in the forest.

Bendavid-Val, himself a descendant of Trochenbrod, masterfully preserves and fosters the memory of this city, celebrating the vibrant lives of her people and her culture, proving true the words of one of Trochenbrod’s greatest poets, Yisrael Beider: I beg you hold fast to these words of mine. Avrom Bendavid-Val's father grew up in Trochenbrod and dropped hints about his childhood there. Avrom worked on economic development and environmental management in developing nations for 45 years and while working in Poland, he decided to visit the site of this vanished town his father spoke of. He was so moved by the visit, he spent the next twelve years conducting research for this book. Avrom lives with his wife, Leah, in Washington, DC.

"Escape to Russia" is a remarkable book sheds light on the story of Soviet espionage in America, the development of the Soviet computer industry, and the structural and cultural factors that contributed to the USSR's inability to match American technological and scientific progress. In addition to being a fascinating account of the stranger-than fiction lives of two American spies, the book is well-documented and well-written, deserving of far more attention than it has yet garnered.

The book is rich with details of Barr’s (Joe Bert) and Sarant’s Andrea Costas) intriguing andexciting personal lives, their families, as well as their integration into Russian society. Engineering Communism follows the two spies through Sarant’s death and Barr’s unbelievable return to the United States.

The Israel Test by George Gilder

Make no mistake about it. George Gilder’s latest book The Israel Test is powerful. Persuasive and demands the attention of anyone seriously concerned with the future of our civilization as we know it.

Gilder lays out in his opening paragraph exactly what he is going to be concerned with: “The central issue in international politics, dividing the world into two fractious armies, is the tiny state of Israel.”

He states his thesis very quickly and directly, saying the issue is not that of a global war of civilization between the West and Islam nor any division between Arabs and Jews. He does not deny the validity of these conflicts, but rather sees the issue as being “between creative excellence and covetous ‘fairness,’ between admiration of achievement versus envy and resentment of it.”

As for his title, he notes it can be summed up by asking yourself a few questions, such as: What’s your attitude toward people who excel you in creation of wealth or in other accomplishment? Do you yearn for their excellence or do you rage at it? Driving home his point he cites a succinct statement from Caroline Glick, deputy managing editor of the Jerusalem Post, “Some people admire success; some people envy it. The enviers hate Israel.”

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Car Care and Repair Illustrated by Dan Ramsey

Great Book for someone new to working with cars. The photo illustrations in the book help show people what a particular part looks like, even though it is in black and white. The highlight in orange of a particular part described can help point out a part of the car, in order to easily identify from its surround parts of a car. The book gives some website to find information whether it would be about car buying to other automotive consumer information. The book, however does not go too much into detail of each parts of the car. This maybe good for someone who know very little about cars. The book looks easier to read and understand and should not be too overwhelmed by the information given in the book.
