"Black Box" by Amos Oz

In Black Box (1987), an epistolary novel, a divorced couple is entangled in a passionate concern with their straying teenage son, who is perceived as a possible symbol of Israel's future: The broken family serves as a metaphor for political allegory.

The title refers to the device used to determine the cause of airplane crashes. An epistolary novel, the narrative focuses on the "crash" of Alex and Ilana Gideon’s marriage. Their letters and others from relatives, friends and business associates chart not only their difficult relationship but also Israel’s entrance into dangerous areas.
